Dr Graham Kings, formerly Vicar of St Mary’s Islington in the Diocese of London, is to be consecrated as Bishop of Sherborne by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, in Westminster Abbey on Wednesday 24 June at 11am.
As Bishop of Sherborne Dr Kings, 55, will serve as an Area Bishop in the Diocese of Salisbury assisting the Bishop of Salisbury, Dr David Stancliffe.
Bishop Stancliffe will present Dr Kings to the Archbishop of Canterbury to be ordained bishop in the presence of 50 supporting bishops, 80 clergy and over 400 guests, family and friends.
Among the supporting clergy will be two bishops from the Diocese of Salisbury’s overseas link partners: Bishop Ezekiel Kondo of Khartoum in the Sudan, and Bishop Pavils Bruvers of Liepeja in Latvia. Their presence demonstrates the close friendship and co-operation between Salisbury, Sudan and Latvia, in which Dr Kings will play a leading role.
Following his consecration, Bishop Graham will assist Dr Stancliffe in the ordination of 21 new priests in Salisbury Cathedral on Saturday 27 June at 11am.
He will be officially welcomed into the Diocese of Salisbury at a special celebration service in Wimborne Minster on Sunday 5 July at 3pm. Civic, HM Forces, emergency services and community leaders will each welcome him and his wife, Ali.
Dr Kings said today: “I sense a profound call from God to the Diocese of Salisbury and specifically Dorset. I hope to share in the inspiration of mission in the urban and rural parishes and support clergy and lay leaders. I look forward also to learning from the Church in Latvia and the Sudan,”
The Bishop of Salisbury added, ‘I am looking forward tremendously to the consecration service and to sharing ministry in the Diocese with Bishop Graham. He has proved himself an outstanding theologian, missioner and priest over many years in England and Africa. He has a passion for sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with others, and I know he will be good news for Dorset and the whole Diocese.’
