A group of seven senior clergy from Latvia were in our Diocese in April for talks with our Bishops and the Cathedral’s Dean.
The group were based at Sarum College in Salisbury and whilst there made a visit to Portsmouth Cathedral. They also attended a Diocesan confirmation service and helped to lead the Cathedral’s Sunday Eucharist, with a baptism, as well as visiting various parts of our Diocese accompanied by our Bishops.
Our Diocese’s link with Latvia began in 1993, when, following years of persecution under the communist regime, one of our Bishops was asked to attend the consecration of the new Archbishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia.
Of this recent visit Bishop David said, “We were delighted to welcome the Archbishop of Latvia with his two new diocesan bishops and their deans for a weekend of
worship, discussion and meeting together. As the church in Latvia regains its confidence, it is splendid to be building a wider understanding of the unity of the church’s ministry and mission with our partners in the Gospel.”
